Our Projects - who we've worked with Print E-mail

1. HIV/AIDS-RELATED PROJECTS

1.1 Sector wide workplace mitigation programme
As leaders in the field of HIV/AIDS management we have been contracted to manage large sector wide projects. One such project was the implementation of workplace programmes for 150 organisations and trade unions in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The purpose of the project was to establish the potential impact of HIV/AIDS within the sector and to advise on strategies to mitigate this impact. This project, funded by the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority, entailed an elaborate skills transfer strategy in which we consulted with stakeholder organisations while concurrently facilitating a skills transfer to at least one employee (normally the HR manager) per workplace. The project culminated in the development of guidelines for the management of the impact of HIV/AIDS across the chemicals sector and the qualification of participants against all existing HIV related unit standards (part qualifications). We are particularly proud to be associated with this project for the following reasons:

  • It's the first comprehensive, sector-wide initiative in the country
  • It's award winning and also received international recognition
  • It exceeded projected targets in terms of the number of participants
  • Research results were used to inform workplace strategies
  • It provided impetus for the development of the NQF based ‘HIV/AIDS Management in the Workplace’ qualification
  • It culminated in an HIV/AIDS workplace model for sector
  • It reconceptualised HIV/AIDS as a business imperative

1.2 Developing Sasol SHARP training materials; training HIV/AIDS coordinators, peer educators and managers
We worked with Sasol to develop customised, unit standards based training materials for their Sasol HIV/AIDS Response Programme (SHARP) and trained coordinators, peer educators and managers. While a number of Sasol employees and managers had attended training provided during the SHARP and CHIETA programmes, it was identified that there was a need to build on previous training by providing interventions customised to suit that Sasol environment and using training materials aligned to SAQA unit standards.

For this purpose, a pre-training assessment tool was developed to assess training needs. The Sasol curriculum included modules on Sasol’s workplace policy, CSI programmes in the community as well as outputs from Sasol HIV-related research (impact studies and KAP surveys).

1.3 Organised labour training project
In this project, we delivered strategic and legal training programmes for the following trade unions: NEHAWU, SADTU, NAPTOSA, CEPPAWU, SACWU, POPCRU, SAPU and IMATU. These programmes were designed to equip shop stewards to effectively participate in the development of compliant workplace HIV/AIDS programmes as well as to ensure that the principles enshrined in local and international labour legislation and related codes are upheld when disputes related to HIV/AIDS in the workplace are managed. In addition, we implemented a national HIV/AIDS strategic management programme for shop stewards in the education and training sector. This project entailed developing a customised programme for the education and training sector shop stewards as well as capacitating 410 shop stewards across COSATU and FEDUSA federations.
