LGBTI Training Programmes Print E-mail

Redpeg has developed a range of LGBTI-related training modules to meet your organisationís development needs. We offer this programme as either stand-alone modules or clustered as a unit standards-based skills programme. The training curriculum is made up of the following modules:

Training curriculum breakdown

MODULE 1: HEALTH NEEDS OF LGBTI PEOPLE

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Define terminology and describe the concepts associated with LGBTI populations 
  • Describe the ways in which marginalization and discrimination impact the health of LGBTI people
  • Discuss the specific health disparities experienced by LGBTI people

MODULE 2: CREATING A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT FOR LGBTI PEOPLE

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Describe barriers faced by LGBTI people in accessing healthcare and why these barriers exist
  • Identify concrete tools to incorporate into your organisation campus or clinic to provide sensitive, affirming, informed and empowering healthcare for the LGBTI community.

MODULE 3: LGBTI RIGHTS IN SOUTH AFRICA

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss the history of LGBTI rights in South Africa
  • Understand the legal rights of the LGBTI community in South Africa

MODULE 4: SEXUAL HEALTHCARE FOR MSM

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss research on MSM and HIV prevention
  • Understand issues affecting access to healthcare for MSM
  • Describe HIV prevention strategies for MSM, including PEP, PrEP & male circumcision
  • Describe health promotion strategies and
  • Encourage access to healthcare for MSM

MODULE 5: HEALTHCARE FOR WSW

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Understand issues affecting access to healthcare for WSW
  • Describe safer sex practices for WSW
  • Discuss sexual violence on the basis of sexual orientation
  • Describe the rights of women in the South African Constitution and Bill of Rights

MODULE 6: GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss gender based violence in the context of the LGBTI community
  • Describe the link between gender based violence, HIV and PEP

MODULE 7: DEVELOPING INSTITUTIONAL POLICY

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the importance of developing policy on LGBTI-related issues 
  • Develop policy around LGBTI-related issues
  • Describe LGBTI programming and resourcing
  • Discuss gender mainstreaming and creating an inclusive environment

MODULE 8: SEXUALITY SENSITISATION

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss terminology and concepts with regards to the LGBTI population
  • Clarify values in the context of the Constitution and Bill or Rights

MODULE 9: TRANSGENDERISM

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss terminology and concepts with regards to transgenderism
  • Understand and discuss specific health needs and barriers to accessing healthcare
